What is a podcast?

Think of a podcast as a radio show or simply as a recording available via the web. Podcasts allow you to listen to recordings when, where, and how you want--on your computer, with just a web browser, or using your MP3 player. Podcasting is not unlike time-shifted video software and devices like TiVo, which let you watch what you want when you want by recording and storing video, except that podcasting is used mostly for audio and is currently free of charge.

How do I listen to podcasts?

You can listen to podcast recordings one at a time (say using your web browser) or you can "subscribe" to an entire podcast series using software on your computer. When you subscribe to a particular podcast, all new recordings will be automatically downloaded to your computer as they are made available by the podcast source. Podcast software will play the recordings for you, and give you the option to transfer the recordings to your MP3 player. You do not need an iPod to listen to podcasts.

Where do I get podcast software?

The number of podcast-listening software applications is growing daily and many of them are free to download and use. A few options include: Apple iTunes (for both Mac and Windows), Juice, iPodderX, and many others.

Once you have downloaded and installed a podcast application on your computer, you can subscribe to thousands of podcasts, such as those from NPR, Discovery Channel, ESPN Radio, and the Technology Alliance. To subscribe to a podcast, copy the podcast's address into your podcast application's "subscribe" function. Once subscribed, the audio files of those podcasts will automatically download or you will be given the option to download the ones you want. Enjoy!
