New scientific insights often come from unexpected and even humble places. Some of the most important recent breakthroughs about human learning and the brain have come from the crib and the nursery. Look at any child. What do you see? Most of us see a picture of innocence and helplessness, a clean slate. But in fact, what we see is the most powerful learning machine in the universe. Learning does not begin in kindergarten. Infants are born learning. What do babies know and when do they know it? On March 10, Dr. Andrew Meltzoff will describe the revolution that has occurred in our understanding of early learning and its impact on lifelong development and education. The discoveries involve brain development, social-emotional development, cognition, and language. The new research is influencing Olympia and the philanthropic community and Dr. Meltzoff will discuss these trends and the science behind them. Many of the new discoveries about early learning have been made at the UW Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences, and this interdisciplinary research center will be described.

Dr. Andrew N. Meltzoff is Co-Director of the UW Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences and holds the Job and Gertrud Tamaki Endowed Chair in Psychology. A graduate of Harvard University, with a Ph.D. from Oxford University, he is an internationally renowned expert on child learning. His discoveries about infant imitative learning have revolutionized our understanding of early cognition, personality, and brain development. His research on the effects of television viewing on infants has helped shape policy and practice. Dr. Meltzoff is the co-author of more than 100 scientific papers and influential book, The Scientist in the Crib (translated into 13 languages). His specialty is learning in the first five years of life and how these critical years lay the foundation for future development.

In 2005, Dr. Meltzoff received the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics award for outstanding research with clinical applications and the Kenneth Craik prize from the University of Cambridge, England. Dr. Meltzoff currently holds the prestigious MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

Dr. Meltzoff is active in the community, having served on the board of directors of the Foundation for Early Learning, the board of directors of University Child Development School, the National Advisory Committee of the March of Dimes Foundation, the European Research Foundation (EURESCO) board, the national advisory board of Parents Magazine, and numerous review panels for NIH and NSF.

We hope to see you on Friday, March 10th, to hear Dr. Meltzoff share his research and discoveries in early learning and its impact on lifelong development and education.
