Since 1997 the Science & Technology Discovery Series has been serving up hearty helpings of the latest in cutting edge research from Washington’s innovative companies and institutions. Starting in September, get YOUR recommended monthly allowance of science and technology for breakfast in Seattle and Spokane.
Seattle:
The Seattle Discovery Series opens on September 14th with a presentation by cell biologist Mark Roth of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, about his research into human hibernation. Among the other exciting speakers lined up for the new Seattle season:
- Christopher Elias of PATH will share details of recent programs aimed at improving global health;
- Oren Etzioni of University of Washington Computer Science & Engineering will talk about predictive technologies; and,
- Tom Vander Ark of the X Prize Foundation will discuss revolution through competition.
The Seattle Discovery Series meets downtown at the Rainier Club on the second Friday of every month from September through June. For more information or to become a member of the Seattle Discovery Series, click here.
Spokane
Now in its third season, the Spokane Discovery Series begins September 21st with a presentation by Deborah Kelley, Associate Professor of Oceanography at the University of Washington, on the Lost City Hydrothermal Field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Among other highlights of the upcoming Spokane series:
- Saif Hussain of Coffman Engineers will talk about technologies that protect people and structures in earthquakes;
- Judd Case of Eastern Washington University will discuss the hunt for dinosaurs in Antarctica; and,
- Jaak Panksepp of Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine will speak about understanding emotional well-being through neurochemistry.
The Spokane Discovery Series features eight breakfasts from September through May. Produced in collaboration with the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research, this program meets on the third Friday of the month at the Spokane Athletic Club. The World Is Waiting… Will Our Children Be Ready? Education Takes Center Stage at the Technology Alliance Annual Luncheon
Since last fall, the Technology Alliance has been working with other business and labor organizations across the state as part of a coalition supporting the College & Work Ready Agenda, a set of shared priorities for building a world-class education system in Washington that prepares our students to be successful in the 21st century economy. We shined a spotlight on the importance of education to our collective future at the May 31st State of Technology luncheon, with a little help from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

New Fellowship Aims to Cultivate the Entrepreneurial Leaders of Tomorrow
At our State of Technology Luncheon, the Technology Alliance officially announced the launch of a new initiative to honor our organization’s founding chair and support the development of Washington’s future entrepreneurial leaders: the William H. Gates, Sr. Fellowship in Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
