The New Industrial Revolution: Alliance of Angels Recognizes Modumetal as 2010 Company of the Year
Imagine if you could grow metal that is stronger but lighter than steel. Imagine creating new materials and coatings that are more durable than conventional metals, using a cost-effective, green manufacturing process. Imagine what you could build – and build better – from armor and airplanes, to bridges and pipelines.
The team at Modumetal dared not only to dream it, but to do it. Welcome to the new industrial revolution.
Modumetal has developed a unique class of nanolaminate alloys with a wide range of industrial, military, and transportation applications. The company uses an electrochemical process, rather than heat, thus reducing the environmental impact of metals manufacturing while revolutionizing performance. Modumetal’s approach, which involves creating layers on the nanoscale, has been likened to the process by which shell or bone grows in nature. The end result is an advanced material that is relatively lightweight, has greater temperature tolerance, and resists corrosion better than conventional metal alloys.
“In more than 25 years of investing in and starting companies, it is rare to see an idea that can create an industry,” said AoA Chair Dan Rosen, president and CEO of Dan Rosen & Associates and member of Modumetal’s board.
“Modumetal is a great example of why we angels do what we do – invest in innovative startups and helping them change the world.”
Each year, Alliance of Angels recognizes a portfolio company that exemplifies the spirit of entrepreneurship. Seattle-based Modumetal was recognized as its 2010 Company of the Year during the Technology Alliance’s State of Technology Luncheon. Christina Lomasney, co-founder and CEO, accepted the award.
“On behalf of all of the Modumetal team, we are humbled and honored to receive this recognition from our partners at the Alliance of Angels,” Lomasney said.
“We are grateful for this award, and even more to the individual members of the Alliance for engaging with us and for putting the force of their collective passion, genius and resources behind Modumetal’s vision to revolutionize the design and performance of advanced materials.”

Aquatic Oil Spill Expert Usha Varanasi to Open the 2010-2011 Season of the Science & Technology Discovery Series
The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off the coast of Alaska left a lasting impression in our minds, and a lasting impact on the environment and livelihood of our neighbors to the north. The memory of that fateful day in Prince William Sound is recalled, two decades later, by distressing images of oil gushing unchecked from an undersea well in the Gulf of Mexico; of pristine sandy beaches marred by pools of sludge, of floating fish carcasses and slick-coated birds, and of entire communities wondering how they will recover, so soon after rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
What did we learn 20 years ago that can help us respond to the devastation wreaked today?
On September 10th, Dr. Usha Varanasi, director of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, will examine the legacy of Exxon Valdez and the effects of oil spills on aquatic ecosystems to kick off the new season of our Science & Technology Discovery Series.
